How to ride a motorcycle in winter comfortably?
Winter shouldn't stop you from riding in pleasure and comfort! Discover our tips for enjoying your passion, even in cold weather.
It would be a shame to deprive yourself of your passion because of the cold, wouldn't it? Check out our tips (not exhaustive!) to combat the cold and winter so you can ride in comfort and have fun!

The thermal underlay
Thermal clothing for motorcyclists: essential for comfortable riding this winter
The simplest trick, and one already used by many in other activities like skiing: thermal underwear! Motorcycle clothing suitable for winter is essential for your comfort.
They come in all sorts and at all prices. So, there's no need to break the bank because even with a basic model, you'll feel much better when it comes to keeping your warmth under your clothes.
Here I opt for leggings and a long-sleeved t-shirt that I can wear under any pants and any top.
Also consider good socks. Heated socks will be more expensive but really comfortable to counter the cold. More simply, socks made of a material that provides resistance to the cold, such as merino wool. Choose them fairly thin because socks that are too thick will cause discomfort in your motorcycle boot over time.

Gloves
How to keep your hands warm on a motorcycle: our winter tips!
On a motorcycle, it's our hands that get cold first. If you have a motorcycle equipped with handguards, you'll already have more peace of mind. If you have heated grips, you'll be the envy of others!
But if you don't have any of these, you can still limit the cold. Here are our 3 tips and advice for winter motorcycles:
- Free but limited tip: Keep your hands outstretched whenever possible (fingertips resting on the brake and clutch levers). This allows cold air to pass over them without hitting your fingers head-on. This limits the feeling of cold.
- A cheap but short-lived tip: Hand warmers. You can find them in different sizes, to slip into gloves (or shoes, or even clothes). The hand warmer heats up quite strongly, so it warms well, but the effect doesn't last for several hours, and the thickness of the hand warmer can be uncomfortable.
- Long-term tip: Heated motorcycle gloves. I finally opted for this option, which has a certain cost at the time but which was quickly amortized given the use. You will find entry-level models for less than €100, and higher-end models between €150 and €300 on average. Super easy to recharge, for the most part, the autonomy is great and several heating intensities are available. Your hands no longer feel the cold!

Fog and rain
Facing the rain on a motorcycle: equipment to stay dry!
In addition to motorcycle clothing and equipment, you can also make your life easier in winter with a Pinlock on your visor.
Pinlock and water-repellent spray: your allies against fog and rain
The Pinlock will protect you from fogging (and yes, in winter with the cold, our closed visor can quickly create fog).
You can also treat your visor with a water-repellent spray to make it easier to see in the rain.
And if, despite everything, we are really too cold, we take a break to warm our hands or feet!

THE RAIN
A COMBINATION
Rain Gear: How to Stay Dry on the Road
In winter, the weather is often more unpredictable. Whether you enjoy riding or have no choice, prepare for the rain by investing in rain gear.
For my part, I had a full wetsuit (which you put on over your equipment, leather jacket and boots included) for 3 years. The problem I encountered with the wetsuit was the leak (poor waterproofing because I didn't close the Velcro properly or water got stuck in a fold on the stomach) and the hole between the legs.
I ended up buying over-pants and a jacket. The BEST! The pants open all the way down and go over your motorcycle jeans and boots. They come up well to sit over the bottom of your jacket to block out the cold and water. And the jacket also goes over your motorcycle jacket and goes down low to sit right on top of the pants. There's no way water can get in. The fact that the two elements are separate allows for much better freedom of movement, and less tension, so no more cracking!
Likewise, you will find entry-level and higher-end models (more breathable, more resistant materials, etc.).
A word of advice : Try it on in store! You need to go up a few sizes to be comfortable. Example: I'm a size M but I'm tall, so I went for an XL to have more freedom of movement over my everyday motorcycle gear.
